Plastic bottles recycled: Learn More
Fans of this year’s Wyndham Championship got an up-close look at how recycling can make a difference for good.
As an official recycling partner of the tournament, Unifi raised awareness around the importance of sustainability at the 79th annual Wyndham Championship in Greensboro, N.C. on August 13-19. To ensure recycling stayed top of mind for attendees, Unifi’s REPREVE® #TurnItGreen mobile tour was on site with tournament apparel made with REPREVE recycled fibers such as Vapor Apparel T-shirts and New Era headwear. Unifi also held a sweepstakes to give away Under Armour/Sunbrella golf bags. And in partnership with Republic Services, Unifi brought 300 co-branded recycling bins—including a neon green one that stood 7’ tall—to the tournament.
While fans came to the Wyndham Championship to watch their favorite golfers compete, they scored their own wins off the green in pursuit of a more sustainable environment. Attendees swung by the REPREVE mobile tour, engaged in learning how bottles are transformed into products and received items made with REPREVE recycled fiber.
But the biggest win of all? The number of fans who brought their plastic bottles to REPREVE recycling bins across Sedgefield Country Club. Thanks to tens of thousands of attendees, Unifi was able to collect 1.8 tons of plastic to recycle. In other words? Unifi, the Wyndham Championship and golf fans saved an amount of plastic equivalent to the weight of a mid-sized car from heading to landfills.
"Like sports, recycling has the power to bring people together in support of a cause,” said Unifi executive Richard Gerstein. “People feel empowered when they're part of something bigger—like creating a better tomorrow.”
Unifi creates REPREVE performance fiber from 100 percent recycled materials, saving billions of plastic bottles from ending up in landfills and our oeans each year. The company has turned more than 12 billion recycled plastic bottles into REPREVE fiber used by global brand in their products—like a pair of golf socks.
"Thinking of all the plastic bottles recycled at the Wyndham Championship as thousands of future tournament shirts and hats really puts recycling in perspective," tournament director Mark Brazil said.
With Americans throwing out up to 2.5 million plastic bottles every hour, there’s never been a better time to emphasize the importance of recycling. The joined efforts of Unifi and the Wyndham Championship showed the power recycling can have when we all work together.
