As a leading omnichannel retailer, Walmart® has spent over 15 years working to create positive change across its global supply chains.

Now, the company is accelerating efforts toward a regenerative business model — one that restores, renews, and replenishes natural systems. Through waste reduction, decarbonization, and a shift to circular practices, Walmart is working to break the traditional take-make-waste cycle.

The collaboration
Walmart partnership
Walmart has collaborated with REPREVE®, made by UNIFI®, since 2015, and together, they’ve achieved a major milestone: transforming more than one billion post-consumer plastic bottles into recycled textiles.

This achievement earned Walmart a place in the Billion Bottle Circle — the highest tier of REPREVE’s Champions of Sustainability program. 

The Opportunity

With a goal to reduce waste and adopt circular manufacturing processes, Walmart sought to create new apparel from textile waste.

Their challenge was to meet the exacting comfort, durability, and quality standards that Walmart customers expect.

Debasis Manna, part of Walmart’s sustainability team, focuses on regeneration, product development and raw materials. “For us, it’s all about scalability and quality,” he explains. “We need sustainable solutions that can meet both our size and our performance demands.”

The Solution
Walmart solution
Walmart’s design team turned to REPREVE Takeback™—our globally available, circular polyester made through a closed-loop system.

Using our proprietary Textile Takeback™ process, we transform post-industrial and post-consumer textile waste into new, virgin-quality yarn. The result is a high-performance fiber that meets Walmart’s rigorous standards.

And for Walmart, measuring environmental impact is non-negotiable.

“If we cannot measure the impact of a decision and educate our consumers about that impact, then we cannot choose it,” says Manna. “REPREVE offers traceability and the ability to calculate sustainable content. Many of UNIFI’s products are backed by life cycle assessment data, which is essential for both impact measurement and consumer education.”
